Here are a few things you can try:
Have you updated your java? http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
When you visit the site, did you select Yes, No, or Always to the pop up for accepting the certificate?
Go to Tools > Internet Options, click the Advanced tab, scroll down to "Java (Sun)". Make sure the check box below that is checked (says something along the lines of "Use JRE 1.5.0_01 for (requires restart)".
Go to Tools > Internet Options, Click the Security tab, drag the bar and set it to Medium.
Go to Tools > Internet Options, Click the Privacy tab, drag the bar and set it to Medium High.
Do you have Norton Internet Security? If so, you may have to allow the games.com ports and/or disable it when you want to play. Any other firewalls you are using? (This includes ones through routers too, ie. Linksys' wireless router has a built in firewall).
Try deleting your cookies, temp internet files, clear history, reboot, and try again.
