Hi,

Obviously some of you have access problems on the site over the last couple days. We have been under a massive Denial of Service attack for the past 36 hours which was impacting some of our site functionality.

The attack was a huge amount of incoming traffic to the site, over 42 megabits for those who understand more technical stuff. Because of the size of the attack, most people were not able to get their requests "in" to view web pages. We have isolated the problem and should be deploying some new hardware that should prevent this in the future. This new hardware cost us around $30k so it took a couple days to get things processed.

This afternoon at some point there will be some short downtime while we install and configure the new equipment.

This was a new attack that we had not experienced before. It took six hours on the phone with senior level AT&T network managers for everyone to understand exactly what was happening and what we should do to resolve it.

We apologize for the disruption of service. We have also tracked the person responsible for some of the disruptions on the site this past week and our legal department is starting action against them. This will be an additional resource drain because the person lives overseas, but we feel it will be money well spent. We will not tolerate this kind of abuse of our s.

Thanks for your patience in this matter.

Case
