I've got a possible solution for you: Put a piece of duct tape in the top right corner of your screen. That way, the words popping in won't bother you.
I find it nearly impossible to know when the other player is about to swing the club. So typing something to intentionally distract them would take a lot of practice. But, I'm sure there are those who will now exploit that by practicing their typing timing more than their swing!
