I know you can switch to a chip, pitch, bump-and-run, etc. even on the green, but that is hardly a solution. It's pretty danged hard to knock a chip shot only 6 feet. If this can't be fixed I am probably going to return the game to the store.

Can't you just grab the flag and drag it further behind the hole. This increases the range of the putt that you can hit.
