My attempts to play at the myleagues site have been completely fruitless, no matter why I try. So I'm going for a real long shot here...
Several former mplayers (including myself, Vuggy, LadyJayne, and a few others) have messed around with a scrabble-like game at Yahoo called Literati. Same idea as scrabble, tiles have different point values, there are 4 blanks instead of two, different pattern to the premium squares laid out... but it's basically mutated Scrabble. There's a ladder for it at a place called laddermonkey.net, which is a ladder site like Cases, except more recent and not as huge yet.
Laddermonkey announced a few months ago that it was going to redevelop itself as a game portal (like Zone, mplayer, flipside, etc), in addition to being a ladder site. It is not yet a game portal... I guess this does take a while.. but among the games promised is Literati, for which they would have had to acquire the license from Yahoo. So these guys ARE willing to negotiate with the companies who have the rights to whatever games they want... and GET these games.
I emailed laddermonkey's boss (known as Russ, the Head Gorilla)... told them about our Scrabble 1 difficulties... and said, look, you're in the process of developing a game portal here. The timing here is perfect. Hasbro by now knows it has 1000's of bitter customers who aren't thrilled with their games.com alternative. They, or whoever the hell controls the online games division, may be willing to deal with laddermonkey... and let them set up a nice online scrabble 1 site... to take the heat off them. On laddermonkey's part, I told them... Look, you don't even have to BUILD a scrabble community, it's already established! You guys just need to get the rights to use scrabble, come up with an interface that will be acceptable to both Mplayer and Zone refugees, and bang, everyone's happy!

I got a somewhat cryptic response today, which sounds more like an automatic form letter than anything else: "We're looking into it." But that's my pessimistic side talking =)
