About the hints... Maven gives you 10 hints at a time and the leave that he/she suggests is usually for more points. I have had situations similar to yours where I think "What if I play this word instead of this other?" I save the game and play my word. Then I load the game again and play Maven's suggestion. It normally ends up giving me more points.
