: I'm more surprised that you didn't remember it as an anagram of DOCTRINE. :)

I tend to remember most words differently from other players. There are relatively few combos that I automatically remember as a series of anagrams (the most similar one to DOCTRINE that I automatically know is NOTICED/DEONTIC/CTENOID). For the most part, I learn words in isolation from each other as I come across them (usually not realizing what their anagrams, if any, might be). For instance, STRETTI might be easily remembered as TITTERS anagram by most people, but I associate it with the other STRETT*'s... STRETTA, STRETTE, STRETTO. Not with its anagram.
As for DOCTRINE/CENTROID... I'd never bothered anagramming DOCTRINE. And CENTROID, as I said, I only learned when reviewing last night's games. Didn't occur to me to anagram that either. My only concern during the game was finding an 8 with N in 2nd or 3rd position... DOCTRINE didn't occur to me, and wouldn't have fit the board if it had.
In other words, I play board position first... find the most advantageous places to play, THEN try to match my rack to those places if possible.
Most players play their rack first... taking whatever rack they have, they hopefully match it to their remembered storehouse of anagram combinations... and maybe a few of them will fit the board. Sort of a shotgun approach to scrabble, whereas I'm perhaps more of a sniper. You're American, so I'm using a gun analogy for ya =)
