to play risk all the packets must flow through all the ports without being hindered

2) firewalls close ports

3) firewall on, ports closed, no risk

solution:

1) assign your computer a static IP. this means it will never change ... it is a fixed number ... you can safely use 192.168.1.99 ... this means your computer is 99 and the router by default will automatically assign all others starting at 100 and go up ... so 99 is safe and there is no conflict

2) go into the router and turn on DMZ and when it asks for the IP ... the answer is 99 ...

3) this means computer with ip 99 will get all packets from all ports ... nothing will be hindered and you can play risk agagin

technical details:

1) to set the computer to a static IP you need to right click on network neighborhood and select properties, then right click on local area connection and select properties, then highlight the last one in the list called Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select properties ... then move the radio button from automatic to manual and enter in 192.168.1.99 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and your gateway is the ip of the router ... its either 192.168.0.1. or 192.168.1.1 depending on the brand ... i cant remember but i think when you go manual you must go manual on the 2 DNS entries ... get these from your ISP and fill them in ... speaking of your ISP if you call for tech support and tell them you want to assign your PC to IP .99 they can walk you through all these "confusing" steps :)

2) enter your router by opening IE and typing in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 depending on brand ... this will take you into the router ... you will need the password ... for most units it is just admin ... tech support for the brand will be able to do both -- set the static ip and turn on dmz ... so feel free to call them ... if you look around in the router tabs you should find a dmz ... turn it on, set it to 99 and save and exit ...

no if that didnt just clear it all up for you feel free to speak to me and i will be glad to spell it out more clearly ... you can cut and paste and print this to give you an idea of what you need to do to play risk while using a router ..

p.s. if anyone tries to tell you to just open up a few ports I would pass on this idea for risk ... the game is too old and the ports are not clearly defined with no way to now obtain the details needed to make it work ... im not saying it cant be done this way, but i dont think its practical ... i have not yet ran into anyone using the "pinhole" method although i bet i could figure it out ... it is just simplier to turn on dmz or the feature that allows all the packets to flow ... it might have a different name in different brand routers ... i think your best bet would be to speak to me direct or call tech support of the router and use my notes above to help explain what you are trying to do...
