Federal and local authorities are at a Martinez home today securing the area from explosive material after learning the homeowner was injured in an earlier explosion.

Officials with the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Fort Gordon, Columbia County Sheriff's Office and Richmond County sheriff's Bomb Squad have been stationed most of the day at the home at 319 Sally Drive, off Furys Ferry Road near River Watch Parkway. No evacuation was ordered, and authorities said they had secured the scene since Friday, when they first learned of the homeowner being injured from a Tuesday explosion.

The 37-year-old homeowner's name hasn't been released, but he lived alone at the home and "He has lost one if not numerous fingers" from the Tuesday blast, said Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.

Officials today are canvassing the home, its backyard - to include a shed - and an area across the street for explosive materials.

Anthony Russo, a supervisory senior resident agent for the FBI's Augusta office, said officials ruled out any connection to terrorism and then turned the case over to ATF.

"There was no imminent risk to the community," he said.

Capt. Morris said the homeowner has been interviewed, but no charges have been filed yet.

Capt. Morris said the homeowner remains at Doctors Hospital, where he was initially treated Tuesday from the blast.

Mr. Russo said his office was contacted by Doctors Hospital yesterday based on the man's injuries and "comments he may have made to staff."

Authorities are not releasing the type of explosives that are at the home, other than to say they are "bomb making ingredients." Officials said they were in the process of determining the quantity of such ingredients at and around the home.

Robert Cave, who lives across the street from the home in question, said today that the injured homeowner has lived in the area for about five years and, "He's been pretty quiet."

He said that for the past six months, he had heard explosive "thumps" coming from the home.

"He told me he was ordering things (online) to make bombs with," Mr. Cave said.

Mr. Cave said at the time he didn't really think anything of the sounds he was hearing, but added "He just didn't know what he was getting into. It might have got too big for him."
