I think you are right, Stinker, that our "disappearance" might be the reason the newbies aren't getting exposed to the "right" way to play the game. Back when we had a ladder room, when people came in out of curiosity, they learned our way of playing and many got "hooked".
And that doesn't happen with the Pairs 2 secret room... I also think it might be too late to undo that, especially since most of the players I know would only play in a different room if Pairs 2 went down for an extended period of time and the DC-DT's got too bad! LOL.
